Recovery of Precious Metals from Metallurgical Residues by Applying the PLINT Process

The PLINT process developed by Tecnicas Reunidas (TR) is a simple, clean and efficient procedure for precious and base metals recovery from a great variety of metallurgical residues produced in copper, zinc and lead refineries or extraction plants. The PLINT process is a chloride-based technology able to deal with many different feed materials that are difficult or non-viable to be treated by conventional processes. This technology presents the ability to be flexible and adaptable to satisfy every application requirements. The powerful, complex-metals formation and easy chemistry of chlorides is the key for so many potential applications. This paper describes the recent and current developments of the PLINT technology applied to precious metals and base metals recovery from jarosite bearing compounds that are often contained in metallurgical residues produced in zinc and copper hydrometallurgical plants. A combination of a new PLINT plant with an existing metallurgical facility should be easily implemented and should substantially improve the overall process economics. A complete pilot plant is available for testing any specific metallurgical residue at Tecnicas Reunidas' Research and Development Centre in Madrid (Spain). This should allow the generation of all necessary design criteria for scale-up of the PLINT process.
