Pyrohydrolysis of metal chloride solutions, especially for recovery of spent pickle liquor, is done by two competitive process technologies: spray roasting and fluidised bed granulation. Both of them are relying on direct heat transfer from the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels to maintain the required elevated temperature for evaporation and reaction in a reactor, while injecting directly the spent solution via nozzles. Despite a lot of similarities, there are some important differences in space requirement, process control and versatility, energy consumption and above all in the solid by-product. Depending on the application, one of these two processes fits better; the fundamentals for the decision which to choose from a point of process engineering shall be supported with this work.
