Calcium Sulphate Solubilities in Concentrated Aqueous Chloride Solutions

In this paper, the solubilities of calcium sulphate dihydrate in HCl, CaCl_2 and their mixed solutions have been determined. The parameters investigated are HCl concentration up to 5M, CaCl_2 concentration up to 2M and temperature ranging from 20 to 80 ℃. The solubility has been reported to increase with the temperature increment as it does with acid concentration, reaching a maximum at about 2.5M HCl, and then it drops. At the same time, the solubility of CaSO_4.2H_2O decreases with increasing CaCl_2 concentration. In addition, the influence of co-existing metal chloride salts, such as MgCl_2, FeCl_2, FeCl_3 and AlCl_3 on the solubility of calcium sulphate was estimated by OLI and determined from 50 to 80℃. The calculated results by OLI were compared with the present experimental data and literature data. The effect of co-existing metal chloride salts on calcium sulphate solubility is a complex one depending on the propensity or not of the metal to form complexes. Thus, in the case of divalent chlorides, e.g. MgCl_2 or FeCl_2, increasing salt concentration results in decreasing CaSO_4 solubility; on the other hand trivalent chloride salts, e.g. FeCl_3 and AlCl_3, cause the solubility to increase due to complex formation.
