The results of leaching cobalt and copper from a static bed of an oxide lateritic ore using acidic chloride solutions are presented. The leaching tests of the 0.2 to 25 mm size fractions ore samples were performed in glass columns. The ore beds sprinkled with a solution of 2M MgCl_2 in 2 wt.% HCl were 122 to 315 cm in height. Over 92% cobalt and copper recovery was achieved after 3 to 6 weeks of leaching. The leaching period was many times longer when access of the leaching solution to some parts of the ore bed was blocked by precipitated products of metals hydrolysis and due to spontaneous disintegration of fine fractions of the ore into smaller particles. Engineering aspects related to the control of the process and to the minimisation of the volatile HCl loss, were investigated during pilot leaching of a 200-ton heap of the same ore. For the recovery of marketable products and for the regeneration of the leaching agent from the produced leach solutions, standard processes could be applied. Results of performed tests and some economic approaches are presented.
