Tracing the development of iron chloride oxidation attempts of DuPont from the 1950's; the development of replacement beneficiation of ilmenite and direct recycling of recovered chlorine to the present process to beneficiate Indian ilmenites. Presenting estimates of capital investment in a 15,000 tpa synthetic rutile batch chlorination modules and estimating the added cost to utilise low-grade ilmenite supplies. The synthetic product, called Reptile, will have a purity in excess of 96 wt.% titania and chlorination reactivity exceeding that of natural rutiles yet retaining a hardness equivalent to ilmenite to reduce dusting losses in fluidised bed chlorinators using removal beneficiation. The replacement process decreases the fraction of the fine particle sizes of the ilmenite from which it is made.
