A Contribution to the Study of Iron Removal from Chloride Leach Solutions

The removal of iron from chloride leach solutions does not constitute yet a well-established technology, as it happens with iron removal from sulphate solutions. However, as chloride hydrometallurgy grows in importance, some thorough studies on iron removal from chloride environments - with more emphasis on practical applications - become more and more essential. In this paper, we report on the removal of iron from iron chloride solutions produced upon leaching of steel making (EAF) dust. To this end, two techniques were used: (ⅰ) oxidative hydrolysis of FeCl_2 with and without any seed at 95℃, (ⅱ) hydrolysis of FeCl_3 by controlled crystallisation with and without any seed at 95℃. Akaganeite (β-FeOOH) was the main crystalline phase identified in the product obtained by controlled crystallisation from FeCl_3, but, surprisingly, goethite (α -FeOOH) was the product obtained upon oxidative hydrolysis of FeCl_2. It was also found that the latter product was less contaminated by chloride. The practical implications of these findings are further discussed in the paper.
