For many years, single and multi-opening presses have been standard equipment in any particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), or oriented strand board (OSB) plant worldwide. Since the successful introduction of continuous board pressing, many new particleboard and MDF plants have been designed to use the continuous board production process. In summer 1997, Unilin/Bospan in Belgium proposed to replace their existing Dieffenbacher multi-opening line, which was delivered in 1989, with a Dieffenbacher continuous press. The existing press was a 12-opening press with a platen size of 2,620 by 6,200 mm. The expected downtime for the project was 20 days. The initial capital investment could easily be justified by the advantages of replacing the multi-opening press with the new Conti Panel System continuous press. This paper provides information on the overall concept and successful conversion to a highly efficient continuous production line with higher capacity, lower production costs, higher line availability, and variable board thickness and sizes. Expert planning for optimum plant configuration and close cooperation with Unilin's experienced technical management made this challenging modification project possible to complete on schedule. A short summary considering the return on investment best demonstrates the economic aspects of the project.
