A series of fretting experiments were conducted on gold plated MDM connectors to examine a possible degradation in fretting performance at very low relative humidity conditions. The tests showed a slight but significant degradation in fretting performance for virgin connectors. When the connectors were subjected to a limited number of pre-wear mating/de-mating cycles before being fretted, the degradation of fretting performance at low relative humidity was increased. This effect is attributed to a possible loss of a continuous adsorbed surface water layer at relative humidity values below 10%.
