There is a great increase in the application of LTCC technologies for constructing microwave circuits, both for operation in handheld (1 to 4 GHz) and fixed site (25 to 45 GHz) applications. Performance of the materials can be critical to the circuit and system performance. What is generally needed is a dielectric with well defined dielectric constant and low loss. Other factors such as temperature stability of resonant circuits is also important. At the same time, compatible conductors are needed which must be capable of precise geometry control and high conductivity when buried within the tape. This paper considers both the theoretical and practical aspects of the application of such materials. A theoretical analysis of the relative importance of dielectric loss and conductor loss has been carried out, in order to separate and more fully understand the importance of the two factors. Combined with this has been a major program of work to establish the real performance of materials. A full set of measurements on a range of alternative LTCC materials from different suppliers has been carried out to characterise them electrically and this data will be presented and linked to the theoretical analysis. Electrical tests use a variety of techniques and comparisons are drawn between these to indicate the most appropriate procedures for the various parameters involved. Work has been particularly focussed on a tape technology specifically for operation in the 1 to 4 GHz region, and this together with a compatible photosensitive buried silver conductor technology will also be discussed. This ability to pattern precise geometry conductors within a low loss tape is vital to the realisation of cost effective circuits.
