摘要

If functional mobility is promoted and maintained, manual handling risks are reduced, as are the costs of purchasing and maintaining manual handling equipment along with a possible reduction in workers compensation costs. The importance of keeping residents functionally mobile is possibly nowhere more evident than in people with dementia. A holistic approach is necessary and consists of communication and movement strategies, environment, handling skills and behavioral approaches. In order to gain optimum functional mobility, there needs to be an awareness of the barriers to the mobility of the individual as well as a good understanding of the individual's character and experiences. Any effort, which addresses these barriers and maintains mobility in people with dementia, benefits the carer by reducing manual handling tasks. This paper will highlight various strategies for keeping people with dementia mobile. They have proven to be beneficial in reducing the physical and emotional stress of the carer, as well as maintaining the dignity and well-being of the person with dementia.
