Comparisons between observed manual handling techniques are described to illustrate the complexities of research within practice. We had the opportunity to observe and assess different crowbar work practices on two separate field visits to a warehouse. We measured the applied forces applied during simulated repeats of the tasks. We redesigned the task on the basis of comparisons of minimising the applied forces. We used biomechanical modelling of the tasks to estimate the resulting compressive forces in the lower spine. The study showed the value of ergonomic assessments. We recommended several alterations to the work practices such as the use of long crowbars and smaller loads. After the recommendations were implemented the employer said that there had been no reports of back injury resulting from these tasks.
