摘要

Operating theatres have a considerable number of manual handling risks and a variety of staff members exposed to them. Persons include, nurses, theatre orderlies, anaesthetists and surgeons. Solutions that will satisfy infection control, surgeons preferences and nurses are difficult to find. Nurse managers are finding that their older and highly skilled theatre staff members are leaving the profession due to the physical demands of the job and staff shortages are being experienced. Theatre orderlies, once injured are difficult to rehabilitate or redeploy. On occasions patients are injured when being handled manually. Some of the tasks identified and assessed in 4 recent consulting projects include: 1. leg holding for preps and during orthopedic procedures; 2. spinal surgery transfers; 3. positioning patients on the operating table; 4. using retractors for long periods; 5. handling sterile trays of instruments and loan sets in the storage areas; 6. setting up instrument trolleys; Some of the solutions which were developed are presented.
