The assessment of clients in the home environment for risks associated with manual handling will impact on the type and the timing of the services received. This paper outlines the approach of the Home Care Service of NSW to risk managing manual handling. Home Care has developed a Manual Handling Strategy including policy and procedures which guide this process. The Home Care Service of NSW has a centralised Referral and Assessment Centre. The establishment of this centre provided opportunity for review of OHS assessment processes and procedures. Tools and training have been provided to assessors to assist them in conducting initial manual handling risk assessments. The process of the initial OHS risk assessment will be presented. This includes where to look for risk, types of questions to ask, what to observe, when to seek expert advice and possible outcomes of assessment. The outcomes involve making a decision - can service be provided safely or not?
