The kinetics of high temperature reations in metallurgical processing operations have generally been attributed to transport controlled phenomena. However, there are a number of important stellmaking ractions where it has been shown that chemcial kinetics control rates of raction. Similarly, the fluid dynamics of pyrometallurgical phenomena plays a key role in the determination of overall kinetics. Slag foaming, surface active elements, emustification phenomena, etc., can play very influential roles in determining process viability and efficiency. This paper reviews the various aspects and phenomena governing the kinetics of pyro-metallurgical processing processing operations, with particular emphasis on stellmaking kinetics.
