Many monopropellant thrusters use a catalyst forrndecomposing the propellant, hydrazine. The catalystrndirectly affects the thruster performance and lifetime.rnTherefore, it is important to confirm that the catalyst isrnsuitable for our thrusters. Until 2002, we used Shell405rncatalyst for satellite and H-IIA launch vehicle upperstagernRCS thrusters. In 2002, however, Shell ChemicalrnInc. ceased manufacturing Shell405 catalyst andrntransferred the product to AEROJET, where it wasrnrenamed S405.rnWe found KC12GA (Hydrazine decomposition catalyst,rnmanufactured by Solvay, Belgium) as well as S405 andrnchecked physical properties of KC12GA and S405. Wernthen conducted a series of spontaneous tests, includingrnlife firing tests on various monopropellant thrustersrn(20N, 4N and 1N) loaded with KC12GA. The resultrnshowed that KC12GA was compatible with Shell 405,rnand that thrusters with KC12GA might have longer lifernthan thrusters with Shell 405. This paper reports ourrncomparison of Shell 405 and KC12GA applied tornJAXA/lA monopropellant thrusters.
