Ceramics from pure alumina, silicon nitride, titanium nitride and also based on alumina with SiC, Si_3N_4, SiO_2, ZrO_2, based on Si_3N_4 with Al_2O_3, Y_2O_3, TiN, Y_2O_3+Al_2O_3, Al_2O_3+AlN, Al_2O_3+AlN+TiN has been produced by hot-pressing under induction heating. The induction heating frequencies were 2.6 kHz, 0.5 MHz and 5.3 MHz. The original powders were obtained by different ways and had different purity and grain sizes. It has been demonstrated that hot-pressed ceramic materials from ultrafine powders can have modified surface layer. The color and size of this surface layer were changed by hot-pressing conditions and composition. Investigated aspects were: phase composition, grain sizes, content of oxygen, contamination with carbon, hardness, fracture toughness and wear of the materials on the surface and in the bulk of the samples.
