This paper presents the experimental results on the correlation between wetting and bonding properties in Al/AlN couples. Applying the sessile drop method the wettability of two types of A1N substrates by molten Al and binary alloys (AlTi6 and AlSi 11) was investigated at 1173 and 1223 K under a vacuum of 0.2 mPa. A special procedure to study the shear strength of metal/ceramic interface using the sessile drop samples has been proposed. Increasing temperature and alloying Al with Si was found to lower the contact angle values resulting in higher shear strength of Al/AlN interfaces.
