Wettability of Si_3N_4 (+6% Y_2O_3 + 4 % Al_2O_3) ceramics was examined by six pure liquid metals (Ga, Sn, Pb, Bi, Cu, Ag) by sessile drop method in a vacuum of 5 10~(-8) bar. Under these circumstances Si_3N_4 is stable only below 945℃. All metals with the melting points below 945℃ (Ga, Sn, Pb, Bi) had similar contact angle values around 160 degrees. At short contact times below 1200℃ the same value has been found for the Cu/Si_3N_4. However, above 1200℃ and longer solid/liquid contact times dissociation of Si_3N_4 and dissolution of Si in liquid Cu were taking place, with the formation of the intermetallic phase Cu_5Si upon cooling. The final contact angle between 110 and 130 degrees obtained probably corresponds to the Cu-Si/Y_2O_3-Al_2O_3 system. Silver showed a contact angle from 128 to 110 degrees while temperature was increased from 961℃ to 1120℃.
