Many wave and tidal energy converters produce low speed reciprocating motion which mustrnsubsequently be converted into electricity. This can happen indirectly, whereby mechanicalrnlinkages convert the motion into high speed rotary motion suitable for conventional electricalrnmachines, or by direct coupling of the moving part to an electrical machine. The latter, a socalledrndirect drive power take off system, requires the electrical machine to be mountedrnwithin the energy converter. The size, shape and mechanical features of the generator thusrnbecomes crucial to the design of the overall device, which implies smaller high force densityrnmachines would be appropriate. This paper investigates the case of linear motion electricalrngenerators for this purpose. In particular, the specific issues associated with using high forcerndensity and low force density machines are compared and discussed. The authors’ latestrnresearch into low force density machines is briefly presented. All discussions are equallyrnapplicable to rotary machines.
