A long-term field experiment with barley has been conducted at Santa Olalla (Toledo, Spain). The experiment was performed on plots in four blocks, applying different treatments of MSW compost at two rates (20 and 80t/ha), cow manure at 20t/ha, mineral fertilisation and a control to determine the effects of these treatments on a barley crop. The treatments were applied during three consecutive years, followed by three years of no application and two years of repeated addition of all treatments. In the last year of the experiment at harvest time, plant samples (grain and straw) were collected for analyses. No heavy metal contamination was observed in plants, but in the compost treatments the contents of Zn increased while Mn decreased both in grain and straw. The analyses of other heavy metals demonstrate the absence of pollution or toxic levels even in the highest dose of compost after a long-term application.
