In this paper, we described analytical and experimental approaches for applying Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (BOTDR) to aerospace structure health monitoring system. It is necessary to improve its spatial resolution and to separate strain and temperature effect. Firstly, Brillouin spectra are analyzed by differential spectrum method to improve spatial resolution and verify this method by 3-point bending test. Secondly, strain and temperature are measured simultaneously using the combined system BOTDR and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and the capability to separate strain and temperature is demonstrated. Additionally, the application of BOTDR sensing system for prototype carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) liquid hydrogen (LH_2) tank under cryogenic condition is shown.
