This paper presents a summary of the adaptive lifting algorithm and demonstrates its potential benefits to helicopter transmission diagnostics. The adaptive lifting algorithm is an adaptive signal representation technique constructed within the framework of the lifting scheme, a time domain, prediction-error realization of the wavelet transform. Adaptive lifting enables a diagnostic algorithm to tailor itself to a specific transmission by selecting a set of wavelet basis functions that best represent the vibration signals obtained from that transmission while under nominal operation conditions. Use of the selected basis set for vibration signal analysis should increase sensitivity to changes in the signal associated with damage. In this work, the adaptive lifting algorithm is used to analyze data collected from the University of Maryland Transmission Test Rig and the results are discussed.
