Affordable fission surface power systems (FSPSs) for NASA's lunar and Mars missions may be achievable if the technology developed in prior reactor programs is sufficient to avoid the need for additional high cost nuclear development programs. This paper reviews the technology required for fission surface power systems using liquid metal cooled fast reactors (LMRs) and examines the extent to which this technology is available from prior work. The history of the US and international LMR experience and related technology development programs are summarized. The technology results relevant to FSPS are discussed and compared to the requirements for satisfying NASA's anticipated needs.
