Process modeling as a tool for improving the hot-stage zinc dust purification process

This paper highlights how an empirical kinetic process model was developed from laboratory and plant test results and applied to optimize the hot-stage zinc dust purification plant at Teck Cominco's Trail Operations. Making major modifications to a commercial operating plant by trial and error is extremely difficult and time-consuming. The kinetic model was originally developed to understand how more than 36 process control variables contributed to quality control excursions in the recycled purification process and was later applied to the current straight-through process. The kinetic model allows the engineer to determine the operating limits of key parameters such as flow rate, reagent addition, tank requirements, temperature and zinc dust size distribution based on equipment available in the plant and the desired electrolyte quality specifications. Modeling helped test new ideas in purification without extensive laboratory and pilot work, save development time and costs, and accelerate the incorporation of new concepts into the commercial plant. It also improved the understanding of the process and established the foundation for future process control improvements.
