In 1998, after extensive trials in the roof and uptake shaft of copper and nickel flash furnaces, Composite Furnace Module Cooling Systems were installed in the reaction zone of a flash furnace shaft, and as electrode surrounds in a slag-cleaning furnace. Both of these locations are subject to rapid refractory wear. More recently, a test module has been installed in the sidewall of a slag-cleaning furnace, in a location where the refractory life is less than one year. This paper presents an analysis of the performance of the modules, as well as an indication of the insights into furnace operation gained through instrumentation of a furnace lining. All of the modules have performed well and further installations are planned.
