Using natural gas for the reduction of copper in anode furnace

Liquid gas was used for the reduction of copper in anode furnaces in "Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex (SCC) of Iran". New legislation forced the operation to switch from liquid to natural gas for their anode furnaces by the end of 2001. Theoretical calculations (heat & mass balance) done by HSC software showed that the flow rate of natural gas have to be increased around 2.9 times compared to liquid gas in order to have the same reduction power. If the natural gas consumption increases around 2.9 times that of propane, more heat is needed. In laboratory scale, results of experiments showed that for the same flow rate of reducing gas, the rate of deoxidation of molten copper are almost the same for liquid gas or natural gas, and for combinations of natural and liquid gas. Based on the experimental results, liquid gas was replaced by natural gas in SCC. The gas consumption efficiency of natural gas was better than for the liquid gas. There was a good agreement between laboratory results, heat and mass balance calculations and industrial experience in Sarcheshmeh.
