Controlling the combustion process relies on information from sensors for process control systems to make the necessary adjustments in optimizing the energy efficiency, product quality and minimizing pollutants. Here we present a multi-species tunable diode laser system for monitoring O_2, CO and H_2O in addition to obtaining the gas temperature. Since the technique is non-intrusive and in-situ, process measurement locations can be selected for obtaining either local or global information. Results are presented from the sensor development work conducted on a laboratory burner in preparation for evaluation on a 500 kW oxy-fuel pilot furnace. The pilot furnace provides a platform for simulating industrial conditions to evaluate time-response, measurement accuracy, dynamic range, and influence of particulate matter.
