The problem of environmentally safe processing of technogenic (man-made) raw materials generated by the metallurgical industry, as well as sub-grade and refractory polymetallic ores, various intermediate by-products with a rather high contents of non-ferrous metals (slags, sludge, residues, Waelz slag, etc.) and secondary raw materials and wastes has an ever increasing importance. A unique design of a DC electric furnace with polarization of the metallized bottom phase (BPP furnace) and a process for treatment of man-made raw materials have been developed and provide a solution to the above problem. Treatment of converter slag generated at a copper smelter in a semi-commercial BPP furnace using DC power made it possible to completely eliminate the excessive bottom accretions, reduce the loss of copper, lead and zinc with final slag by a factor of 1.5, 1.8 and 2, respectively; the furnace productivity was improved twofold, as compared with a similar AC furnace. Appropriate process conditions have been developed for treatment of charges and slags in a BPP furnace ensuring a number of substantial advantages, including the following: 1. High recoveries of copper (at least 96%) and precious metals (98%) into matte; metallization of mattes ensures higher recoveries of precious metals; 2. Production of final slags with minimal residual contents of non-ferrous metals; zinc and lead report primarily into fumes, while sulfur is recovered in the matte. The environmental safety is ensured due to insignificant amounts of off-gas with low contents of toxic elements and throughout cleaning of discard slag of non-ferrous metals.
