Mass and heat balances are very important for Peirce-Smith converters. At Sarcheshmeh, normal converting operation is carried out based on skimmers experience without any process calculations. In our view, converting will become the bottleneck of any future smelter expansion. It is therefore very important that we can solve the issues of converting capacity. There are many options to address the problem but, although we have some experience with oxygen enrichment and dry concentrate injection, we needed to better understand the process before we could improve it. For these reasons, we have developed a mass and heat balance program of our operations. This paper presents the use of the software in our converting operations.
