摘要

The Washington fault zone (WFZ) is a 70-km-long, down-to-the-west, high-angle normal fault that extends northward from Arizona into southwestern Utah. The WFZ is one of several large Quaternary normal faults that define the boundary between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range physiographic provinces in northern Arizona and southwestern Utah. In Utah, the WFZ trends through the St. George metropolitan area, which was the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States between 2000 and 2006 with a growth rate of 39.8%. Estimates of future growth predict that the area's population will exceed 700,000 by 2050.
