The Movement of Green Fence Transformation for Elementary Schools in Taiwan

摘要

In 2009, a movement of green fences transformation was carried out in 58 elementary schools in eight cities in Taiwan. In this paper, it presents how the research is conducted and a procedure is established for participating designers. Particularly, participatory design process was introduced and applied in several studying cases to minimize the worry of schools' administration over having to open their campus to the surrounding communities. Based on the results of the study, it's recommend that in the future the green fence transformation should be extended to more schools so that a city's greenway system can be constructed. It's also believed that the best way for the design of green fence space should involve ideas and imagination from teachers, students, and residents. Once completed, green fence transformation can turn a school to a local focus in the community that provides its semi-open space and functions as an environmental center.
