A Case Study of Mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect Through Landscape Reconstruction in Street Space

This paper looks into the problem of urban heat island (UHI) effect and how it could be mitigated in the landscape reconstruction process. The analysis of urban coverage composition shows that the deteriorated microclimate in the city environment is partly caused by the change of urban surface. It provides further discussion on some landscape measures for mitigating UHI effect from the perspective of landscape design. Through analyzing the landscape elements of street thermal environment, this paper suggests that adding plants and changing the previous ability of pavements could be used in the reconstruction of the street space to release the UHI effect. A detailed analysis of the "Campus Waterscape" in National Taipei University of Technology is provided as an example in this paper, its contributions to ecology, aesthetics and culture are summarized. It concludes that the change of physical environment in street space could make some contributions on mitigating the UHI effect.
