Competing on speed, a strategy also known as time-based competition (1), is essential to competitiveness today. While time-based competitive strategies can be applied to any business, including banking, insurance, hospitals, and food service, here we focus on its application in a manufacturing firm. We call this specific application of time-based strategy Ouick Response Manufacturing (QRM). For manufacturing firms, implementing QRM strategies means reducing their lead times--both, the time to bring new products to market, and the time to manufacture an existing product from its raw materials--and efforts to reduce these can result in significant competitive advantage.
