A significant amount of modern day companies and countries economic prosperity and leadership is based upon entreprenuerism, innovation, new product or process development, ie., management of technology. As competitive forces increase, the competition for resources between product R & D, and basic (or unbridled) research can produce tensions. Excessive (unbridled) research can lead to diluted focus on societal problems, wants, and needs; too much focus, emphasis, on product R & D can lead to lack of appreciation of for the law of diminishing returns ie; expensive incrementation, the topping out of an S-curve, and economic stagnation and demise.
