This paper presents an analysis of a material flow problem at a company that supplies large stampings for the automotive industry. The stamping plant is increasing production by 66 percent and must predict necessary material handling resource requirements. The analysis is conducted using FactoryFLOW_( direct R ), a layout design and evaluation software package. This study is unique in that a deterministic model was developed by adapting FactoryFLOW_( direct R )'s ability to capture the required operating time for each material handling equipment type. The study evaluates four alternative operation policies to minimize material handling manpower.
