Efficiently coating the surface of strands inside a Rotary Drum Blender (RDB) is the key to obtaining good Oriented Strand Board (OSB) properties. Surging, an unwanted strand motion, is caused by strands nesting and accumulating on the atomizer boom. These strands eventually slough off and fall to the drum bottom. While on the boom, stands cannot be coated with resin. It is our hypothesis that surging decreases board performances and further, that boom shape can be modified to minimize nesting.rnResults from boards made from strands coated with resin under the best blending conditions, i.e., no surging, and the worst, i.e., chronic surging, are compared. Interestingly, surging decreased dramatically when the boom shape switched from circular to triangular. These results indicate that surging increases the variability of internal bond strength in boards. With a better understanding of strand motion and the effect of boom shape, OSB manufacturers should be able to improve product performance and lower production costs.
