In most applications of GPS based attitude determination, multipath is the major error representing up to ninety percent of the budget. Multipath estimation is thus a mandatory task in an attitude and control system design which could take on board a GPS based attitude sensor. Moreover, a multipath measurement on the real spacecraft is often not compatible with a fast performance assessment because of a constant evolution of mechanical arrangement along the spacecraft design. The cost of a radio-electric mock-up development and of the measurement itself is otherwise conflicting with a low cost approach which justifies the GPS use as an attitude sensor in addition to a navigation sensor. This is the justification why a software multipath simulation is attractive. In a frame of an ESA study, ALCATEL has proposed to make suitable to a GPS multipath simulation, the ELFI software developed since ten years by the AEROSPATIALE CCR (centre de recherche). The validation of the software for multipath simulation is obtained thanks to multipath measurement data collected during a CNES study. The final purpose of this software is to generate multipath map enough precise as to allow multipath calibration which would lead to an improvement of GPS-based attitude determination accuracy.
