Two different methods using acoustics have been developed to measure velocity profiles of flow with high resolution. One system, CDVP, used coherent Doppler methods, and measures the phase shift in the backscattered sound between transmissions. The other, CCVP, used the backscattered sound to obtain profiles of sediment concentration, and measured the time taken for the sediment structures to advert between two transducers using correlation methods. Data from both systems have been compared with that from a laser Doppler velocimeter, and showed excellent agreement. The CDVP provides velocities in line with the transducer beam, and operated satisfactorily providing 14 Hz velocity samples. The CCVP provides velocity profiles normal to the transducer beam, and in the direction of the line between the two transducers. The CCVP gave excellent results with steady flows, with the data averaged over 60 s. Further work is in progress to assess its response at shorter time scales.
