The design and properties of anrnantenna suitable for integration with active devicesrnfor use in medical sensor applications have beenrninvestigated. The small size of the sensor implies arnsmall sized integrated antenna, which in turnrnrequires a high operating frequency. On the otherrnhand the selection of the operating frequency isrndependent on the sensitivity necessary in thernanalysis of the biological tissue using the integratedrnantenna. The dielectric properties of the tissues arernobtained from their measured complex relativernpermittivity.rnTwo different dielectric resonator antennasrn(DRA) suitable for the detection of changes in therndielectric properties of tissues (e.g. in the smallrnintestine) have been developed and analysed. Thernantennas operate around 8 and 9 GHz respectively.rnSimulations have also indicated the possibility ofrnseparating normal from malignant tissue using thisrnmethod.
