On September 20, 2007 POSCO and Danieli reached the agreement for the joint development program of a new generation of plant for the production of flat products, to be installed in POSCO Gwangyang site, Korea. After many years of trials and developments, POSCO finally decided to completely revamp the existing casting and rolling facilities of his existing minimill in order to both overcome the limitations of the original plant and develop a new revolutionary technology in thin slab casting. Due to technological limitations of original plant, POSCO was not satisfied of the results and decided to completely change the plant layout. In order to reach this ambitious goal, POSCO selected Danieli as technological partner, thanks to his recognized experience in design high speed thin slab casters and hot strip mill facilities, as well as in process automation. The original plant was composed by two single strand thin slab casters connected to two roughing stands for reach line, originally supplied by SMS DEMAG and connected to a finishing mill supplied by MITSUBISHI. In place of the original two thin slab casters, a single "new generation high speed Danieli thin slab caster" will be installed, designed to cast 80 mm thick slabs, up to 8 m/min casting speed. Developed together with POSCO operating and research power, the new high speed thin slab caster, designed to cast at 8 meters per minute, unprecedented in industrial plants, will represent the evolution of already record breaking Danieli fTSC (flexible Thin Slab Caster) enhancing to a new technological level the outstanding quality and productivity performances already proven in Danieli plants. This new plant, called CEM by POSCO, marks the birth of a new generation of mini mills for flat products, being a quantum leap in steel industry technological development towards the vertical integration of separate processes in the steel production.
