Within the Swiss chemical process industry, the majority of managers are very reluctant to the idea, that an approved wet pipe foam-water sprinkler should first of all protect manufacturing facilities, sometimes employing quite large quantities of highly flammable liquids. This approach is based on the commonly held idea that implementation of some specific regulatory requirements (i.e. explosion-proof electrical equipment, ventilation, etc. ), proper design of production installation, efficient training of the employees and appropriate housekeeping (i.e. control of ignition sources etc.) are the best safety features to prevent initiation of a fire, that can lead to destruction of concerned facility. The goal of this study, carried out by our institute, was to show that some ordinary accidents (i.e. accidental spill of highly flammable liquid) can be at the origin of major property losses due to fire occurring inside a building, protected by traditional fire safety measures.
