As Electric Propulsion (EP) becomes more prevalent within the spacecraft propulsion community, there is an increased need for active control of the xenon flow. Moog’s participation in advanced development projects like the JPL Deep Space One has produced variable flow control using bang-bang regulation. In addition, Moog has concluded a Research and Development project that resulted in the Moog Proportional Flow Control Valve (PFCV), which can be used to throttle the flow of xenon over a wide range of inlet pressures and flow rates. Refer to AIAA 2000-3745 for specific information on the PFCV. rnThis paper will present an overview of three flight systems that incorporate active flow control to support the mission profiles. These systems are summarized as follows: rnA Xenon Control Assembly (XCA) leveraging existing JPL Deep Space One technology for future applications. rnXenon Flowrate Controller (XFC) that is fully qualified for use with hall current thrusters. rnCompleted Xenon Feed System (XFS) featuring the PFCV for complete xenon control. rnIn addition, a brief overview of emerging Moog valve technologies will be reviewed that will continue to support the next generation Xenon Feed Systems.
