For optimization and adjustment of ion beam thrusters, knowledge of physical beam parameters and plasma processes in the ion source can be provided by suitable diagnostics. For this purpose, novel – but relatively simple (and cheap) – diagnostic methods which may complete the common diagnostics are suggested. The so-called ”non-conventional” methods are: rn1. axial and radial determination of the ion beam profile by energy flux measurements, rn2. determination of the thrust by visualizing the interaction of the ion beam with a cloud of micro-disperse particles (micro-probes), and rn3. characterization of the sheath region in the ion plasma source by analytical sheath photometry.
