Development and studies of new generations of satellite MON and MMH-based composite overwrapped propellant tanks have been initiated at MAN. The new technologies lead to significant savings in both mass and costs. Mass reduction by an amount of approximately 25% has been predicted while reduction in costs is expected to be large since the spin-forming process is to be employed thereby avoiding the cost-intensive forging and machining of the domes. rnThe manufacturing of such tanks, however, leads to new challenges which must be overcome in order to produce reliable parts. The new challenging areas are to be found in both the design as well in manufacturing. The interaction between these two areas has increased since the design is more sensitive to manufacturing constraints due to the increased number of manufacturing parameters having an influence on the stress distribution. rnThis presentation will provide details about the ongoing optimization efforts taking place in design and analysis and the main results achieved so far.
