摘要

Over the last decade Vacuum Insulated Panels (VIPs) have progressed from an expensive engineering curiosity to a cost effective solution for many advanced insulation needs. These needs range from the Space Shuttle's biological experiments to protecting vaccines as they are transported around the world. The long term goal of the VIP industry has been to reduce costs and improve performance to the point where it becomes an attractive technology for appliance applications. Development efforts have focused in three key areas: advanced, high performing, low cost materials; effective, high rate production machinery; and design optimization of products using VIPs as their core insulation. Cost and performance goals are being met and VIPs are starting to appear in high end consumer appliances where they bring notable advantages to the appliance manufacturer.
