Energy efficiency improvements of domestic refrigerators and freezers needs to be evaluated with a sufficient accuracy in order to determine the new European energy labeling. A DG XVII SAVE project "COLD 2" has been initiated with appliance manufacturers, laboratories and consultant companies of several European countries. The Center for Energy Studies is in charge of the elaboration of software able to calculate the annual energy consumption of refrigerators and freezers depending on various technical options: 1. insulation thickness increase 2. new insulation materials (Vacuum Insulation Panels, for example), 3. medium and high efficiency compressors, 4. heat exchanger surface increase, 5. high efficiency heat exchanger, 6. improved control system Two software have been developed. CYCLEREF~(~R) simulates the dynamic behavior of the refrigerating system, and ENEREF~(~R) calculates the cabinet heat losses and the annual energy consumption. A series of tests has been performed by the Center for Energy Studies ARMINES for software validations on 7 different appliances. This paper presents the example of a bottom mount refriqerator-freezer. Tests aim at the measurement of heat losses and energy consumption measured according to EN 153, in view of verifying the accuracy of calculations obtained by the two software.
