The concept of the single screw compressor, developed in the 1960's, offers the potential of high efficiency and low noise. Despite these advantages, the single screw compressor has not become widely proliferated. It is believed that high development and manufacturing costs have hindered its commercialization. Until now, the machining of the rotors for single screw compressors has required the use of specially designed machine tools and the utilization of manufacturing processes that were laborious, inflexible, and expensive. A new single screw compressor design and manufacturing process has been introduced that greatly enhances the manufacturability and development of single screw compressor rotors. This new design and manufacturing process enables rapid, low cost, and flexible development programs. The new manufacturing process is equally applicable to prototype and high volume production. Recently, a proof of concept project of the new rotor design and manufacturing process was completed showing excellent results.
