The relationship between the mechanical strength of optical fiber and coating with time aging was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Prior to the strength and the coating diameter of optical fiber measurement, all specimens were exposed in fluorescent light and stored in a constant 23 ℃ /50% R.H environment. The strength was tested at various time intervals after draw up to 270 days. The coating diameter change was also performed to determine that it affects the mechanical properties of the fiber. As a result, the strength of fiber increased with time aging but the increasing rate was quite different depending on the coating thickness. The coating diameters decreased with time aging. These values were varied until approximately 200 days after draw, when they begin to level off. Based on the Lame formula, the axial stress in primary coating was calculated and it was seen that there are no noticeable differences between measured and calculated values of optical fiber. Also, It is found that the mechanical strength of optical fiber has a strong relation on time aging and coating.
