A well-tuned ribbon coefficient of friction is useful in optimization of ribbon processing and handling properties. The optical attenuation in the ribboned fibers can also be significantly reduced with a tailored coefficient of friction for the ribbon matrix material. This paper describes some techniques that can be used to modify the frictional properties of optical fiber ribbons. The techniques discussed here can also be applied to other cable components. The paper focuses on one technique since it is the most novel in the fiber optic industry at this time - surface treatment of the ribbon, specifically by the application of a wax layer. This technique provides the benefit of not having to add slip additives to ribbon matrices. This, in turn, affords an additional leeway in the design of ribbon matrices since they can now have increased adhesion to fiber inks as well as higher mechanical toughness needed for other handling properties. Results of experimentation, including coefficient of friction and optical attenuation testing, show the promise of this technique. The effect of application speed of the wax is also investigated. Additionally, comparison of different types of natural and synthetic waxes and application methods is provided.
