In recent years, drastic improvements have been made with respect to the capabilities of capacitance measurement devices for the wire and cable industry. The utilization of capacitance time domain data for Fast Fourier Transform and Structural Return Loss Prediction has especially been enhanced. Requirements for SRL Prediction of 1 GHz and beyond have driven this capacitance measurement revolution. And, the ability to measure periodicities at higher frequencies is bringing a new dimension to line troubleshooting for assignable causes. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the most recent improvements to capacitance gauging technology, highlighting issues such as signal-to-noise ratio and maximum possible frequency for SRL prediction. Two anonymous case studies are analyzed, one a DataComm manufacturer and the other a COAX/CATV manufacturing facility. These case studies, wherein numerous experiments were conducted, prove how this advanced capacitance technology, when used for FFT/SRL Prediction can lead to overall product improvement as well as the elimination of possible causes of Structural Return Loss at higher frequencies.
